Since 1989, New York City photographer Margaret Morton has documented the profound human need to create, no matter how extreme the circumstances. Since September 11, her project also has included the expressive display of flags, from the memorials around Ground Zero, to a Lower East Side pasticceria, to Fifth Avenue haute couture. Her photographs of homeless communities have been exhibited and published internationally, including her books: Fragile Dwelling [Aperture]; The Tunnel: The Underground Homeless of New York City; and Transitory Gardens, Uprooted Lives [Yale University Press]. Her project has been funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, New York State Council on the Arts, New York Foundation of the Arts, Graham Foundation and NYU/Voyager [www.fragiledwelling.org]. Morton received her MFA from the Yale School of Art and lives in New York City, where she is a Professor at the Cooper Union School of Art. |
